TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

Trinidad and Tobago is a vibrant, unique and culturally diverse twin island Republic. It is the southern most Caribbean island, located 130km south of Grenada and 11km northeast of Venezuela. These islands were under previous Spanish and British rule hence its diverse cultural background.

Fun facts about Trinidad and Tobago

It is the birthplace of steel pan. Steel pan is the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century.

Some of the most melodic music you can ever hear is from this musical instrument the steel pan.

The red represents the sun and the energy of the people. The white represents the water that surrounds the islands, water represents purity and innocence. The black represents the land.

The currency of Trinidad and Tobago is Trinidadian and Tobago dollar($TT)

The largest brain coral in the world can be found of the shores of Tobago. This brain coral measures 10 feet high by 16 feet wide.

Trinidad and Tobago had the 1st Olympics 100m sprint champion from the Caribbean. Mr. Hasely Crawford did it in 1976.

Trinidad and Tobago boasts of the biggest and best Carnival in the world. This is true as I have experienced carnival in Trinidad more the once. Visit the islands at Carnival time, there are loads of activities, events and parties at that time. Hear the sweet steel pan music, enjoy local food and see the spectacular and colourful costumes. This is when the island really comes alive.

Trinidad and Tobago is the best Caribbean destination to see leatherback turtles. Every year 10,000 giant leatherback turtles visit their shores for nesting.

Tobago has a swimming pool in the middle of the ocean named Nylon pool. It is a natural in-sea shallow pool 3 feet deep located off Pigeon point this is only accessible by boat. Nylon pool is a favourite attraction for visitors to the island.

The 1st black contestant to win the Miss Universe pageant in 1977 was Miss Trinidad and Tobago Janelle Penny Commissiong. In 1998, Miss Trinidad and Tobago Wendy Fitzwilliam won the Miss Universe Contest as well.

The La Brea pitch lake is the world’s largest natural deposit of asphalt. The pitch lake is a popular tourist attraction in Trinidad. The lake is 250 feet deep and covers 100 acres.
